"He's the last resolution she intends to break. "

Still licking his wounds after a messy breakup, Nate is at loose ends for New Year's Eve and itching for a wild and crazy adventure to jolt him out of his rut. Now if he could only convince his best friend, Cassie, to break away for an impromptu road trip to Times Square.

Fun as it sounds, Cassie is reluctant to accept Nate's invitation. Little does he know, she's made resolutions of her own-resolutions about finally getting over her long-standing crush on him. Telling herself this trip will be the perfect "last hurrah," she packs her bag.

The trip is a fiasco from the outset. A car that won't start, a freak storm that strands them on the side of the road, and a long drive with too much time for true confessions. Cassie's rocks Nate to the core, leaving him wondering if the best thing that ever happened to him has been right in front of him all along.

Warning: Contains two best friends, a secret crush, and a road trip that leads to tow trucks, unexpected hotel-room sharing, epiphanies, sex, and more.

So this was my first book (if you count novellas) that I read this year because it takes place around New Years, so I thought what perfect timing! I'm also a sucker for road trips, friends-to-lovers trope and invisible unrequited love stories, so I knew this would be a fun little read.

It starts off with the two best friends Nate and Cassie deciding to do something spontaneous right after Christmas. Licking his wounds after a failed relationship, Nate suggests that they should go on a road trip to NYC for New Years eve. What better place to celebrate the occasion, right? A shocked Cassie agrees to accompany him on this impromptu trip to New York, thinking what's the harm in having one last hurrah with your best friend? Little do they know what's in store once the fun begins.

Nate is as clueless as these male heroes come. Oh, he's smart, but what I'm talking about is the feelings his dear best friend secretly has for him. Feelings she's kept to herself, and endured the pain every time a new bimbo occupies his bed and arms. They've been there for each other, through the best and worse times, but it's not easy to harbor non-platonic feelings for your best friend knowing that you are in the friend zone. Never the less, she stuck by his side through trying times. So, maybe this road trip may be a little crazy due to pressing time, but maybe this could do them both some good. Having car troubles before they even get on the road is only the beginning of their woes. Cassie's resolution is to get over Nate once and for all. After a chain of frogettes has finally reached it's end and feelings are revealed, his resolution is to get with Cassie. As the journey begins and the bottles are popping, they find that their feelings go far deeper than on a platonic level. But Cassie wants to be more than just another in his bedpost, so Nate has to step it up and convince her that she is so much more.

When It's Right is a cute, short story to read around the new year. It's full of festivities, adventure, emotion, laughter, friendships, escapades, new beginnings, the unexpected and a lot of steam. The banter between Nate and Cassie is rich and it's evident of how close they are. The romantic chemistry between them are genuine and sweet that it just fills your heart. And the sexual chemistry is hot and passionate. Grey knows how to deliver on both fronts very well. The build to crossing that line keeps readers engaged in them. I am amazed at how much quality and emotion she was able to fit in under a hundred pages.

They say that your best friend makes the best lover -- or something like. Well, I hope you get the idea. Sometimes who you're meant to be with has been right in front of you the whole time; you just have to open your eyes.
